OnStar, a GPS service that has been found only in General Motors vehicles, became available July 24 as an add-on rearview mirror compatible with 90 million older vehicles – and it is ideal for seniors and those with disabilities.
OnStar allow you to easily navigate new or confusing locations without looking at directions or a map, and in-vehicle communication can provide you with safety and security services should you need emergency help while you’re in your car.
Its new GPS service, called OnStar FMV (For My Vehicle) offers the same services as the factory-installed version, including:
- Automatic crash response connects the vehicle to an OnStar advisor and provides the exact location of the crash to emergency responders, even if you can’t respond.
- Hands-free calling via a Bluetooth connection to a mobile phone and external microphone.
- Stolen-vehicle location assistance
- Roadside assistance for non-emergencies, such as a flat tire.
- Turn-by-turn navigation: All navigation interaction is by spoken instructions. Press the blue OnStar button to call an advisor look up directions, send the route to your FMV and tells you how many miles it will be.
- Actual addresses: You can also ask OnStar to get you to the nearest gas station, restaurant, etc.
- eNav: Pre-plan routes on a PC and send them to your car before you travel.
- Push the red “Emergency” button to call OnStar in a crisis, such as witnessing a collision or a crime in progress.
Most insurance companies will give you a discount on your insurance if you have OnStar FMV. That discount may even out the cost of OnStar FMV.
