When it comes to creating the next big thing in accessibility driven products, there’s a lot of competition out there. From consumer and vehicle technology, to athletics, mobile computing and more, the possibilities are virtually endless.
Here, we spotlight some of the best in modern accessibility technology that you should consider incorporating into your lifestyle.
ABLEnow Savings Accounts
Developed by a Virginia-based savings and loan institution, ABLEnow is a financing system that allows people with disabilities to save substantially more money, without jeopardizing their state or federal benefits packages. The system closely monitors your spending habits, in relation to your benefits packages, to find a happy medium between under and overspending.
Amazon Echo
This smart speaker is useful for more than just ordering paper towel refills off Amazon. The Echo has a wide range of voice commands that help those with disabilities reclaim much of their independence. Less expensive than most specialized equipment, the Echo allows users to do everything from program home thermostats, to reading books, texts and emails aloud.
Dot – The Braille Smart Watch
Using a series of responsive, well, dots, the Dot smart watch allows its wearer to read off everything from text messages and emails, to important notifications and alerts all through the Braille system. Simply connect the wearable, via Bluetooth, to any smartphone, and let it do its magic.
“Be My Eyes” App
Much like Taskrabbit and other task-focused mobile apps, Be My Eyes uses a similar system to connect the visually impaired with volunteers who can then help users do everything from getting their groceries, to checking the mail if they’re out of town.
Liftware
Liftware is a self-stabilizing handle that helps those with neuro-muscular degenerative diseases, like Parkinson’s disease, eat food with confidence. The Liftware system comes with a charger and three utensil attachments: fork, spoon and soupspoon. Liftware is light, portable, and easy to clean.
The National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) is an advocate for mobility and accessibility for caregivers and drivers with disabilities. If you need help with converting or buying a handicap accessible car, truck or van, please consider one of our Quality Assurance Program mobility equipment dealers.
