When you are in the market for a accessible vehicle, the dealership you choose can make the transaction a dream – or a nightmare.
A qualified dealer – one who is experienced in dealing with those with disabilities – can guide you toward the vehicle or equipment for your unique needs and your particular budget.
Here are some questions to ask to help you get on the road to freedom:
- How long have you been in business? How many conversions do you perform a year? (Three or four are not enough!)
- Are previous customers happy? Ask for a contact list of people who had similar needs and call them.
- Do you offer financing? Some offer 10-year loans with low monthly payments. Part of your cost may be covered by insurance or military benefits, and most major automobile manufactures offer rebate programs toward the purchase of adaptive equipment.
- Do you offer on-site repairs for wheelchair vans, adaptive trucks or SUV’s?
- Do you offer rentals or leased vans? You may need to lease a van for a short term. Look for easy termination.
- Do you offer extended service contracts on the vehicle and adaptive equipment?
- Do you offer 24-hour service? NMEDA has a Quality Assurance Program (QAP) that is the only nationally recognized accreditation program for the adaptive mobility industry. All NMEDA QAP Dealers must meet high standards regarding the services that they provide, including 24-hour service.
- Do you take trade-ins? If you already own a vehicle, that will make it easier.
- Can I test drive it before buying?
- What is the warranty like? (They can range from 3-year 36,000 miles to 5-year 60,000 miles.)
- Do your technicians attend classes yearly for the latest technology?
- What is the vehicle maintenance schedule like?
- Do you have special offers on vans or adaptive equipment for veterans?
- Do you offer a buy-back plan?
Print this out and take it with you. It may help make your dream come true.
